Don't do it! I purchased the CA2PK calculators thinking it would be a great deal! Wrong! It's a great deal if you only want the smaller handheld. The large, desktop model doesn't work efficiently. The keys keep sticking. When using it, I need to constantly watch what i input as the keys don't always register because another one is stuck. Spend the extra few dollars and get a better one. A real workhorse I am a CPA who depends on calculators. We have several of this model in our office, and have used similar Sharp machines for years. We have found them reliable, easy to use, durable machines, and feel the price is reasonable for the quality of the machine. They do need replaced every 4 to 5 years, but by then we feel we have received our value from them, and have always replaced them with a Sharp machine identical or with very similar features to this one. The very best in 10-key calculators I'm an accounting professional who has used Sharp calculators for over 15 years and have found this model to be the best. I use this model at my office and just recently purchased one for use at home (replacing a less expensive Sharp model). The cost is a bit more than some of the other models but well worth spending ~ the keys are easy to the touch, the speed is fast, has capability for 12 digits, all the features that I've ever needed and very dependable quality. Winnie the Pooh I'm an accountant, I've used Sharp Calculators for years. I've tried other brands but ALWAYS come back to the SHARP. This model has been my favorite. The keyboard is comfortable, and allows you to perform many tasks with ease.

ProjectCalc Recieved right on time from the seller. tried a few calculations, and easy to use. Looks like it will be a good value for the money. May save many arguments with my wife over the totals of fractions in measuring projects. Home Project Calculator As a woodworker I've found this small calculator to be a great addition to the shop. I'm decent at fractional arithmetic, but sometimes that can get a little shaky when in the middle of a project step and this tool ensures the dimension calculations are correct and in a the fraction measure that corresponds to project plans (no decimals or metric measurements allowed!). On top of that, when I had a question the company responded very quickly with the right answer and then followed up a few weeks later to ensure I was pleased with their response. I strongly recommend this purchase for a woodworker of any ilk, whether professional of hobbyist. has the hexadecimal conversion I bought this as the price was good and it had the hexidecimal converion built in which I wanted. Poweful tool for the scene shop Building scenery for the theater we are always under a time & acuracy crunch. The Construction master pro DT helps us to handle both foot and Inch manipulations and construction detailing. The rise & run & diagonal calculations are a timesaver when we are dealing with raked platforming or out of true flats. The compound miter key has already saved me hours of fussing on oddball scenic units. The ability to store risers heights in the stair calculations allows us to easily determine stair details by using our stock, but not building code compliant stairs. The calculators flexibility is one of its greatest assetts and one of its great drawbacks as well. I wish that there was a help system in the unit remind the user of how to use some of the more arcane controls. The included instruction book is great, but a book is not the fastest way when you need to use a function now that you last used months ago. Nice Printing Calculator This Sharp EL-1750P is a pretty great printing calculator for the price. I needed one for my new job and didn't want to spend a lot, so this is what I got. The only thing that I didn't like about this calculator is that to subract one number from another, you have to press the number, then the plus sign, then the other number, then the minus sign. I don't know if this is how all of these types of calculators are or not, since this is the only one like this that I have ever used... but pressing the addition symbol to subract seemed a little weird to me. I am used to it now, but I tend to get frustrated using a regular calculator at home that actually adds everything when you hit the addition sign! Other than that, I am satisfied with the 18.99 I spent on it. A great tool at tax time Excellent features, easy to use, as good as the bigger models. A must have if you do your own accounting, especially at tax time. Sharp EL-1750V a great buy This calculator is small enough to keep on my desk, but the keys are large enough so I hit the rights ones. Has basic keys to perform tax increments, percentages and good memory handling. There's more, but I seldom (if ever use the other functions). Very smart key set-up for those who want an accounting/adding machine type calculator. I'm very pleased with it.

My opinion on this I love the SmartFrench products with native French speakers in conversation, but the Introduction to French, Vol 1 and 2, I, personally, would skip, because they are "explanations" of grammar, and I think it is more effective to go right to listening to the conversations, and absorbing the sound and flow, and than speaking. Even with no previous French, I think this is the best way to learn, because this is how I learned the language years ago. So, while this is a good product, I personally would invest in the CD-ROM or CDs with the conversations by native French speakers....and would bypass the CDs which explain grammar.

Sonin DT210 InchMate Pro My two year old D210 InchMate Pro just died. Worked fine one day, sat on my workshop table overnight and wouldn't turn on the next day. Didn't drop it, no static discharge. A hard reset and a new battery didn't help. Dead.Pros: Will handle calculations in increments as small as 1/64 inch. Pretty nifty conversion between units, including yards, feet, inch decimal, inch fraction, and metric.Cons: Uses a special $3.00 CR2016 3V lithium battery. Inputting fractions is a bit tedious . If you input a fractional number and then input an integer or decimal number without also specifying the units of the second number (inch, meter, etc.) the calculator displays an error message that you cannot recover from. You have to clear everything and re-enter ALL your numbers over again. inchmate pro You cannot be this item for the price !! It is very simple to use. Takes all the guess work out of construction math. The time I saved on the last 2 sets of stair stringers alone more than paid for it.

Casio vs TI Professional I study Finance and Mathematics. I have both TI: texas inst financial calculator and Casio. TI Professional: Pro: 1. you can use this at Actuary and CFA exams. 2. once you get used to it, it is a good calculator Con: 1. harder to use than Casio 2. battery supported, you MUST have extra battery when you go for any exams (CFA, Actuary, etc) Casio Pro: 1. more features 2. easier to use 3. battery and solar supported 4. navigation feature, you can scroll up and down using few lines of display Con: 1. you can't use this at CFA, actuary exams 2. school text books teach you how to use fin cal using TI, not this one My opinion: If you are not finanace major, just usnig this at work or school for principle classes, get casio for much easier use If you are Finance major, taking any cfa exam, or actuary exam, get TI prof, there is no choice because you can't use Casio. If you are a beginner and want to get friendly with these lovely devices, use TI to calculate and use Casio to check your answer. I hope this review helped Recommended for beginner's ONLY I teach finance at the university at undergraduate level and our department recommends using this calculator for the students. The calculator work well for fundamentals of finance classes where the number of years are even numbers and do not include decimals. I have used this calculator to calculate bonds in advance finance classes were the number of years includes decimals (i.e. 1.71786). The answers it gives you are wrong. Try solving bond valuation manually where N includes a lot of decimals and compare it with the calculator. You will find that the calculator will give you wrong answers. I had tried Texas Instruments or HP for the same problem and I got correct answers. I recommend this calculator for beginner's in finance or people who do not want to solve complicated finance problems. If you plan to use for complicated problems, I recommend Texas Instruments or HP. Here is an example: Use CMPD for the following inputs: N=3.43562 FV=100 PMT=1.375 I=1.355% The prevent value should be -100.066697 but the calculator does not provide that answer. Try it with Texas Instruments or HP and that is the answer you will be getting but unfortunately with CASIO, it does not give you the correct answer. Read Before You Buy I've been in the finance industry for nearly 10 years. Over the years I have always look for a business calculator that could handle every day finance calculations but provide ease of use. I have tried HPs and TIs but have always thought the key stokes necessary to do simple bond calcuations were somewhat tedious. When I read up on the Casio FC-200V I though my search had ended and thus purchased it. True enough this calculator with it's scroll through menus is very easy to use and logical and has perfomed every calculation that I have tried successfully. So why did I give it 2 stars? For the simple fact that in the normal calcuation mode it does not allow comas to seperate the 1,000s, 1,000,000, 1,000,000,000 and so on and so forth. For example if you key in one million the display reads 1000000 and not 1,000,000 which just about every calculator I have used does. Comas are used in the other calculator functions but not the basic calcuation mode? Why is this? It seems to me that Casio decided to be lazy and not allow for comas on the basic calculation mode. For this I will not use this calculator. For a business calculator with so much promis I was so disapointed. If anyone from Casio reads this please allow for comas on the basic calcuation mode, for I will buy that calcuator in a heartbeat. If you don't care about the comas I think this is the best calculator on the market.

The best calculator for anyone who bills by the hour I first 'stumbled' across this unit in a store 6 or 7 years ago. Great features, nice size, good price The TI-89 is an excellent calculator. It has an absolutley HUGEfeature set, and is so advanced that it can basically do most math for you. My favorite features are the CAS (computer algebra system), which can solve a lot of algebraic equations for you, and the factoring function (I dont have to waste time factoring on paper anymore! whoohoo!). My old ti-83+ seems like a slide rule compared to this thing, but the 89 is still quite easy to use. In addition, not only is this calculator great for math, its great for games! There's a multitude of mathematical programs and games that you can find for free online. . . The only downside to this calculator is that the rich feature set can actually be a problem. A lot of students that use this calculator rely on it too much, and some of them barely understand any of the math that they are supposed to be learning. It is probably for this reason that it and its brother the TI-92 (difference between the TI-89 and TI-92 is the 92's qwerty keyboard, useless for a calculator in my opinion,and the 89 is smaller) are banned in some colleges, and on some tests, like the ACT's. If you've got the discipline not to rely too much on this fine piece of equipment (if you're a student), I highly recommend this calculator. But be warned, keep your old calculator around for tests that you can't use your 89 on, and NEVER rely to much on it. Oh TI-89 how do I love thee? It's ability to find derivatives and antiderivatives (which the TI-85 cannot do) as well as many other calculus functions is invaluable. In calculus, I was always far ahead of my class due to this calculator! In statistics, its tables and graphing is extremely easy to use and its statistical summaries are much easier to access and read than those of the 83 or 85. The pretty print feature makes finding mistakes and reading the answers much easier. The graphs (3D) are far superior to that of the TI-83 or 85. I would recommend this calculator over the 92 for high school students due to the fact that the TI-92 (with its QWERTY keyboard) is not allowed on the SAT I or II tests or AP tests. WAY overpriced I'm sure that these are lovely batteries, but $8 for a $1.50 battery is a little out of this world! Shop around just a little bit and you can find a much, MUCH better deal. bigger numbers I use these batteries for my calculator, and I was asked to review them. So what can I say? What is to be said about batteries? How's this: With ordinary batteries, my calculator would only calculate small numbers. With these, the numbers are so much bigger! OK, maybe not. But I will say this: Obscure batteries like these are hard to find. But at Amazon I found them easily, reasonably priced, and with Amazon Prime the shipping is free. When that low-battery indicator comes up on your calculator, Amazon Prime is the best way to replace them.

52 Year Old Rates The TI 84 SPlus I have owned the TI 82 and TI 83S Silver Plus before this. TheTI 84 is another wonderful product from Texas Instruments for the student in high School or College student. Any complaints about speed is irrelevant. I personally found the TI 84 very easy to read, fast, nice case-I like it better the TI 83 Silver case-and it included some programs that were not on the TI 83. It is supposed to have other stuff that the TI 83 did not have but I did not notice this. This is because I bought it to assist me in Algebra, trig and etc. For the money it is a great investment and a very useful tool. I will say that one area I noticed a great difference in was viewing the window. For me, (and I wear bi-focals) the TI 84 was noticeable in its clearer image and etc. Hope this is helpfu. -Dave calculator is great; PC interface software disappoints The TI-84 Plus Silver Edition is a powerful calculator with almost every function that one could desire, a powerful programming environment, and a well-organized keyboard. On the other hand, the calculator-computer interface is slow and the PC software is limited and poorly documented. One can transfer programs from the calculator to the computer or vice versa, but this capability is not documented in the user manual. I would like to be able to edit a calculator program on the computer, but it appears that this is not possible. I also have one complaint with the programming environment-- There should be a "break" or "done" command to exit from a loop without using a goto. Based on my current knowledge, I would rate this product at 4 stars rather than 3 (Amazon does not permit me to change this). Dr. Phillip M. Great Home Office Calculator I run a home business and keeping books is a critical part of my daily work. I needed a calculator that had large numbers, larger keys and printed off tape. Scrounging around Amazon.com I came across several models that would have done the job well. I have had Sharp calculators in my office at work, and know this to be a reliable brand. I came across this particular model, and having done some on line research, Amazon had the cheapest price of anyone on this model. I have to say that I have not been disappointed in this purchase. It is a very reliable calculator, the paper tape with 2 color printout is very readable, and the numbers are large, well lit and the keys fit my big fat fingers. It has some great features like percentage and sales tax that you can place the sales tax % in memory. There are other tax functions as well. This calculator does not take batteries, and that's fine cause it's a waste of money to put batteries in one of these. This is a good calculator and one that I do recommend for the home office. It works great, simple and the tape is a standard tape size so I can get it at my local grocery store. Very nice. SHARP is sharp. Excellent produst that takes abuse I have had this calculator since 1991. I use it alot and I have had it in my car since the day I bought it. I purchased several more to keep in my office and around the house. I especially like the big numbers for easy reading and the the big keys spaced far apart so you don't have many missed entries. You can buy alot of cheap calculators but none so easy to use and so long lasting. Great Desktop Calculator I keep this at my desk and it's a great tool for anyone needing a quick calculator for the small financial tasks. I use mine all of the time, especially at the computer! This little machine is worth its weight in gold As a CPA an adding machine is like an extension of my right hand at times. No matter how computerized things get I'll always want my trusty little adding machine. Since I found this little Canon about 5 years ago I've changed jobs a couple times, and every time I HAD to order this exact machine because of its ease of use and attractiveness. (I finally bought one with my own $$ for my current position so that I can take it with me if/when I move on to something new.) It has a nice silver color with a black "cover" over the blue numbers on the display. It has a clock and calendar option. It prints black positive numbers and red negative numbers. If you get one of these, make sure you open up the top and take the tape off the ribbon. It's like scotch tape (or something similar) put on there for shipping. If you don't take it off, you'll think the machine is out of ink during the first week or two because the ribbon won't be moving.

Good calculator, but flawed The TI-34II is a good calculator that is easy to use. Unfortunately, it has one fatal flaw. While it allows numbers to be entered in scientific notation, it doesn't have a feature to show the result of a calulation in scientific notation. With a 10 digit display, it can be hard to figure out if 100000000 is 1 billion or 100 million. Lack of comma's to group digits into 3's also hurts. I ended up buying a CASIO FX-115MS, which does have the scientific notation and comma's. If the TI had the comma's and scientific notation, it would beat the CASIO hands down for ease of use, and also contruction. I also like the fact that it remembers prior calculations even after auto-powering down. The CASIO forgets after any power down. Excellent calculator If you think this calculator is for elementary school kids, you're WRONG. I can't afford a fully flegged graphing calculator yet, so this is my only alternative. It's served me extrodinary through Honors Chemistry and Geometry (especially calculating moles and gas pressures). It's also the calculator that my school has for us in case we don't have a calculator. Overall, this is one of the best calculators you can get for your twenty bucks or so, buy it! Perfect for middle school level math I have the original TI34 calculator and bought it back in the 6th grade for Pre-Algebra. I'm now a college sophomore and still use it occasionally. This calculator was perfect for Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry and I couldn't have imagined using any other calculator. There was no need for anything more advanced (such as a graphing calculator) in those classes. It is very simple to use and doesn't have too many buttons. In fact, I've never even used half of the buttons that are on it. It is very durable as it has lasted me 9 years of dropping it and spilling drinks on it. Too Frustrating, Horrible Documentation, Not Recommended Too Frustrating, Horrible Documentation, Not Recommended I am an engineer and purchased this calculator (based on amazon reviews) for graduate engineering courses. Several weeks into classes (many hours trying to figure out the functions) it was too difficult to understand quickly and I abandoned it for the semester. I used an hp calculator in undergrad engineering but the complicated new menu layout and the horrible documentation make an awful combination. I have now spent more 40 hours trying to figure this calculator out and still consider myself confused. I find the examples in the manual poorly written and poorly indexed. Even basic functions are too complicated. Many examples just don't work. For entering a 3x3 matrix I followed the example. There are actually two steps missing which you have to guess and find yourself. Someone should thoroughly test these first. After feeling I was deceived I went back and looked at the other hp50 amazon reviews carefully. In 20 of the 5 star reviews the reviewer only reviewed the hp50 product which now makes me suspicious. In addition, 15 other excellent reviews are from foreign countries in such simplistic and incorrect english that I wonder if they really saw, used, learned, or tried to program the hp50. Even re-reading many of the other 4 and 5 star reviews that I think are genuine I noticed a lot of "however..." comments. Before you buy here are some of my comments. Many are mentioned in other reviews but I give them here to justify my review number. - Documentation is horrible (as mentioned in many other good and bad reviews) -Way too frustrating to learn how to use the product - Many functions are two strokes (shift+function) (like x2) -888 page manual (4" thick), colossal waste of paper, hardly any writing on each page - Because the PDF manual is so big it is difficult to navigate -Index alone is 25 pages, could be on 6-7 pages, too much flipping pages to find things - ENTER key is now bottom right of calculator (further to travel to enter data) -I don't like the heavy leather case: clumsy and weighs almost as much as the hp50 -Its a nice case for opera glasses, but for a calculator it should be light and easy/fast to remove (its not) - Case with calculator inside approaches 2 inches thick (is that necessary?) - It has a weird magnetic case button that doesn't seal on the first try, you have to push it around until the magnet connects properly every time you close it - Navigation up,down,right,left buttons are hard to push, slow, and have a loud click - Battery cover comes off when removing calculator from case, poorly made in China On the positive side the unit itself seems sturdy not unlike my original hp. Excellent display. Positive click buttons. If you're doing basic algebra, trig, logs, it is very easy to use. I find that when doing more advanced functions, I'm always needing to reference something in the manual to get it done. Sometimes hard to find functions on the keypad, since there are as many as 4 labels per key. SD card works well, but causes about a 2 second delay every time you turn on the calculator, which can be a nuisance when you're in a hurry. I like the very large RPN stack capability, as well as controllable font, where you can show more than just the 6 lines of the stack that it defaults to. Would recommend the 50g to anyone needing a lot of power. I've really only used the 50g in RPN mode, but it will do AOS also.

Great Product This calculator is very capable of computing complicated algebraic equations. A lot of my classmates have a TI 34-36 and were having problems calculating fractions, or converting from decimal to fraction and back again. This is very easy to use and just a few minutes reading the guide will get you very familiar with how to use it. The bracket feature seems to confuse the calculator, so just use the parenthesis as often as you can. I was very surprised at it's capabilities, especially since I only paid $18.00 for it. Good for the most part It does all you need it to. exponents, square roots, squares numbers, etc. It's very easy to use and the graph is also very easy to use. It's very hard to read exact numbers on the graph, probably due to the small size of the screen. If you want to graph a table, this feature doesn't exist with this calculator like it does with the more expensive TI-83. Sentry Graphic Calculator The calculator itself is fine. Seems easy to use and comes with the instruction book so that is a plus. However, the hard case fits the back of the calculator very well but DOES NOT stay on the front where it is needed the most!!! I probably would NOT buy this particular calculator again because the hard case does not protect it. It's fine if you don't want to carry it or take it anywhere. As long as you only keep it at home on a desk or something then it is fine.

I use this calculator everyday at work and also have one at home. I became addicted to it when in public accounting traveling from office to office and now, seriously, can't live without it. I'm buying one for my husband because it bugs me when he steals mine!

Great calculator for number crunchers.
For those people who like an adding machine feel without the hassle of carrying around tapes or plugging in cords, this is a great calculator for you:

+ The solar power / battery backup system works very well (my last battery lasted 10 years)
+ Large buttons make touch 10-key operation a breeze.
+ Twelve-digit display handles nearly every calculation situation.
+ Standard functions (rounding, grand total, etc.) come in handy.

- The only con is the size. When you buy a calculator big enough for comfortable 10-key operation, it's not going to fit in a purse or shirt pocket.

This is not a financial calculator. So, look elsewhere to calculate interest payments or NPV, but for the basics, this one is hard to beat.

Pricey but useful
Excellent tool for ten key user. Overpriced because there is not a lot of demand for ten key logic anymore.

For this price it would be nice to have Scientific functions and choice of Adding Machine, Algebra, and RPN entry systems.

This from an "odd duck" that crunches both scientific and financial data.

Only purpose is to scare you.
I took a review class and did lots of practice problems on the Transportation area of emphasis. This book was bought to see if I was ready for the test. I could hardly answer any of the questions! They were all very tricky. It made me wonder if I'd have a snowball's chance on the test.

Well the test was much easier than 90% of the questions in this book (as another reviewer sort of noted). I certainly wouldn't try to use this as a study guide as it only "teaches" its own twisted questions. I would give this book away now the test is behind me, but no one would benefit from it, it would probably only frighten you! In general its meant to sell to panic-y test takers like me who want to cover all the bases.

Good Practice Problems
The problems in this book are all qualitative. The solutions in this book show possible errors that can occur when solving the problems in addition to the correct solution. Below the problem is a "hint" to help you get started in the right direction. I didn't use the "hints" and didn't find them to be effective for my learning style. The problems are more in-depth than those found on the test but the idea behind this material is to introduce the student to the concepts found on the exam and improve your solving capabilities in a limited amount of time. The book doesn't teach you how to solve a problem in 6-minutes, which is what the title leads to believe.

Best Problems for studying
I thought this book was great. The problems were realistic to the length of test problems and the solutions were straight forward and easy to follow.

This is a very good calculator. We have two of them at home.... It has the necessary buttons, and others including: MRC, M-, M+, check mark, and a +/- button on the top. The buttons are big enough, and spaced out well, so you shouldn't have a problem with a mess up on your calculator. Even if you do, you can press clear (red button at the top left hand corner) one time, and it won't erase your whole problem. Nice job, Casio.

Smaller than you think.
It's a solar powered calculator that works. Not much else to say. I originally thought it was much bigger, but the dimensions given were "packaged" dimensions. It's maybe an inch bigger than the palm of your hand and fits in your back pocket.

Handy calculator, small size but big numerals
I bought this calculator for my wife because she is legally blind so she needs something that she can read.
This calculater has huge numerals yet the unit folds in half so that it fits nicely in her purse and is no larger than a makeup compact.

The best thing about this calculator is that it operates at ANY angle of opening. Most folding calculators I have looked at only work when fully opened so they are twice the size when being operated. This one operates at any angle so she can put it in the upper area of the shopping cart with the screen area at a 90-110 degree angle and it works nicely. It has a 12 digit display screen so you can use it for large calculations and has most scientific functions which makes it great for school.

Because it folds in half, there is no danger of damage to the display screen when it is in pocket or purse from keys or change bumping into the screen.
Last, but not least, it has a solar panel to drive it when in the sun. This will extend the life of the battery many times its normal life if you use it a lot outdoors or near a sunny window.

This calculator is really handy. Especially if you are in middle school. Fraction's have never been so easy to do on a such a calculator. To anyone who is going to buy, just remember to notice that this calculator is not a graphing calculator. I highly recommend this calculator to middle school students!

Great Calculator
I use this calculator for Statistics class. It has parenthesis which helps to reduce the iteration of calculations. It has store function with multiple variables to store the answer from previous calculation and easily scrolls up and down to previous calculations even after screen had been cleared. It has solar charge panel. It works under the minimum light conditions. I recommend this calculator for non-graphing calculations and everyday usage.

Good feel, but wrong order of operations
The calculator is much faster than TI's other scientific calculators. You can input numbers and symbols much more quickly, using both hands. the down part is that the order of operations is incorrect. For example, if you type: 8x10^5 / 4x10^5, you get 2 x 10 ^10, which is wrong, because the answer is 2. Every other TI model gives the right answer though.

Electronic tortoise
The Casio HR-8TEPlus is a lot slower than its grandfather. My grandson wanted a new calculator, so I gave him my old Casio and bought this new one. Big mistake. The action is slower - you can't set an automatic "A" decimal for adding money and there is no clear explanation of how to use the alternate keys. I like the older model better.

Perfect Size
I've owned several Casio calculators over the years and have been very pleased with all of them, this one included. I particularly like the size and the keypad has a nice feel (or touch) to it. I wanted something smaller, since I no longer have a home office. It's convenient to have the printing feature when I need it. The price was very reasonable. It has many "features", (although I will probably never use most of them) it's nice to know they are available. This product deserves a five star rating.

I love it!
I absolutely love this calculator. I used to have the Ti83 silver but then I decided to upgrade. This calculator has more space and well, it's pink. Not really a math person, everytime I walk into the math class room and take it out, it just brightens my mood. This calculator is easy to use, and very practical. You can use it for your highschool and college classes, and also for standardized test like the SATS. More memory is helpful because you can store more custom made applications. The silver edition lets you change faceplates as well so if you ever get tired of the pink, just pop it off and switch the plate. I love this calculator, and i guarentee you will be happy with your product.

Gotta Love a Pink TI
This is my first TI. It has been easy to learn. I am also fortunate that my math book provides instructions on how to use it for different problems and graphs! I have no complaints and if I did it would be because I don't know how to use all of the features!

This is a perfect calculator
This is a great example of a product that only does one thing, and does it well. It isn't a PDA/cellphone/MP3 player hybrid whatchamacalit, it is a calculator. The screen is easy to see, and the contrast can be adjusted to improve visbility. The buttons are large. I rarely hit a button I wasn't intending to.

If you are thinking about upgrading from a TI-83 you definitely should. I am math tutor, so I am very familar with both models. The TI-84 is loaded with useful applications that can't be found on the 83. For instance, the TI-84 has an application that allows you to graph and shade inequalities. It is a great application that makes it easy explain inequalities to students. You can also load flashcards on it with simple graphics, and even design quizes.

I love the color. It is a nice soft pink that is very pretty. I've seen the calculators that are all pink and I think they are ugly. The all pink calculators are a dark purpely hot pink that is just glaring and ugly. The combination of soft pink and grey on this calculator is much more feminine and stylish. The cover also has a neat retro design.

At first I thought it seemed kind of spendy for a calculator, but I have been very happy with this purchase.

A word of warning to math students. Don't just assume that any ole scientific calculator will do. If the instructors says to get a TI-83/84 they mean it. Other scientific calculators don't have the same functionality and it can really put the student at a disadvantage. You can use EITHER the TI-83 or TI-84, but it needs to be one of those, and the TI-84 is worth the investment.

The Canon LS-85H calculator does what a simple calculator is supposed to do quite handily: it easily accomplishes basic mathematical functions via a keypad with practical key size and has provision for memory calculations, working with percentages, and finding square roots. While it is limited by its capacity to work with only eight digits, this calculator should be adequate for simple mathematical duties. Push the LS-85H beyond it numerical limit, and an overflow function returns an error message and freezes the keyboard.

Measuring a little less than 4 by 5.25 inches and boasting a large, upright display, the LS-85H is easy to use, and is easy to read in well-lit rooms. Powered by a solar cell, the LS-85H also contains an alkaline battery which allows the unit to be used under most lighting conditions. Battery life is dependent upon usage, though once the alkaline battery is discharged the calculator can still be used on solar power. A new battery can only be installed at a Canon Service Center. To help conserve battery power, the unit automatically turns itself off if it is not used for eight minutes. A tap on the N/C key turns it back on. --Luis Uzeta

Warning: Extremely easy to use.
I bought this to replace a calculator I was given at work. The unit my employer provides rounds off its calcuations. It also has a switch marked "5/4" for which no one seems to know the purpose. In other words its "user friendly".

Canon to the rescue. This unit has two wonderful features. (1) It adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides. (2) That's all it does. So when you're on the phone with someone, trying to figure out what the total is, you don't have to worry about accidentally getting the square root of pi.

What does another excellent, but smaller Canon calculator -- the Canon
LS-82z -- "want to be when it grows up"? Right! THIS calculator -- the Canon LS 85H calculator!``The smaller calculator -- also reviewed for me by Amazon -- is an excellent little machine. But I can see how its smaller size, (and in particular, smaller keys), would be a problem for those using it on a continual basis. Men especially, as they tend to have larger hands than women....

The slightly larger, Cannon LS 85H calculator, being reviewed here, is almost as perfect a general-purpose calculator as one can find these days! A handy size, which is at home either on desk-top or pocket/purse.
"Man-size" keys, which are still not overwhelmingly large, which a person with the largest hands, and also one with the smallest, can use
with the utmost of ease. The eight-digit display is large, and very well spaced. Nice little "extras", found in most -- but not all -- other general-purpose calculators: a percent key, a square root key, and a sign change key. (The sign-change key does not appear on the smaller, LS-82Z).
True, the larger LS-85H calculator has an enclosed, "wrap-around" display, (enclosing the entire top part, all together), rather than the "picture-frame" display, (in which the numberic display is indented, and "framed" by the rest of the top of the calculator) of the smaller calculator. (And I, personally, find the "picture-frame" display far more attractive). But the larger LS-85H calculator stays on for approximately 3 minutes before turning itself off...approximately a full minute more than the smaller machine, and this may mean more to many users.

About the only things missing from this calculator are an "off" key, (not found on the LS-82z, or on most other calculators, either), a "resume" key, (found, at present, only on the large and somewhat cumbersome Sharp (R) VX=2128R calculator -- but a feature that would be welcome on ANY calculator!), and a "live" battery, (you know -- an
"AA" battery, or even two --which can easily be replaced. Like they used to have when calculators first came out?)

Oh, oh...wait a minute! I see that Canon ALSO has, (or had), another model that looks ALMOST like this one does, but which has, as a model number, LS-85H 4050A001AA! Looking at the description of it....YES! It has a live battery! AA! Sadly, there was only one of these for sale......and, yes....this reviewer has done what the vast majority of people would do under the same circumstances....grab it! Hopefully, Canon will produce more of this "AA" powered portable calculator....as will all other calculator manufacturers! Replacable lithium batteries are just NOT easy to replace! (I see that Canon DOES have a larger, 12-digit "AA" powered calculator, still on sale! -- Canon 7438A003AA). It got one 3 star review....but if I wanted a larger, 12-digit calculator which uses a "AA" battery, I'd try this one for sure.

Anyway, the Canon LS-85H, which is the main calculator being reviewed here, is a good, basic, little machine, with size, keys, and basic features, that feel, and respond, "just right". Great for "Goldilocks", or anyone else you know -- even yourself!

I purchased this little gem after my Radio Shack EC-317 went south for the winter, summer, spring and fall.(I guess after 12 years of service, it has a right to kick-off)I had one heck of a time finding SOMEONE, that could tell me what this Material Calculator could actually do. Calculated Industries makes several models to choose from, including this model (ProjectCalc Plus)which range in price from [money amount]. I chose the ProjectCalc Plus because, what I was looking for was, a calculator that would convert decimals to fractions and then back again. Mind you ALL the Calculated Industries models will do this BUT, the ADVERTISING on the packaging isn't CLEAR ON THIS!!! The biggest problem I had, was just finding out EXACTLY what this little unit would or wouldn't do.

After all is said and done, I think this unit is a great deal for the price([money amount]). Mind you, it won't find run and rise for stair treads but, it does just about everything else. If I have anything negative to say about the unit, it's this, my tired old eyes have one heck of a hard time reading all the writing around the buttons on it. Perhaps someone from Calculated Industries will read this review, and put this problem before the design team for an improved version?! So, do you need to spend [money amount] for a calculator, perhaps, but I DIDN'T and I'll bet that MOST folks won't have to either.

To conclude, it's a good unit at a fair price.

Indispensable
I am an avid do-it-yourselfer and do a variety of projects around the house. I found this little gem in the local hardware store and had a great time playing with it, so I bought it. I, of course, had no intention of trusting it implicitly but that soon changed. I have owned this thing for 2.5 years now and have used it on several large projects. Now I rely upon it for all sorts of things. It makes it so easy to estimate exactly what I am going to need, with confidence, even when I am not entirely sure what it is that I am doing.

Recently, I was purchasing crushed granite (gravel) to make a walkway that my wife felt she needed. I had to call a local rockery and get them to deliver it. It was critical that I had a very good estimate. Too little and I would need to pay another delivery charge, too much and I would be stuck with a bunch of extra gravel. I was quickly able to estimate the job and came up with an exact figure in both cu-yds and tons. I was very pleased with the result. One dump and no left overs. It paid for itself that day.

Another time, I re-roofed our shed and had no idea how to estimate bundles of shingles, no matter, I entered it into the calculator, got my answer and nailed it in one shot.

I highly recommend it. Sorry for the overly glowing review but I really like this thing. It could be the best $20 that I have ever spent.

Inch Calculator Great
I find ProjectCalc Plus to be one of the handiest tools in my shop. I generaly have no problem dealing with fractions, 1/8" + 3/16", but ProjectCalc sure makes it easier and more accurate. Board feet calculations are greatly simplified as well. There are lots of capabilities I have not gotton to yet but look forward to many years of constant usage.

Outstanding Casio quality for an excellent price
I have been using Casio electronics for over a decade now -- starting with first data bank and touch screen watches. The brand has never failed me, so I have chosen Casio FX-260 over TI and Sharp competitors again. The calculator is great for graduate classes in Computer Science and Finance for sure (this is what I am using it for), and I am certain it will be more than enough for Physics, Chemistry, and other sciences. Compact design, a high-contrast screen, rubber keys -- everything is just right. And if I want to do graphing, I will use Matlab. Highly recommend!

Good for tests. Lacks accuracy and convenient features
FX-260SOLAR is light, slim, and durable. This is also the official calculator for use on GED Math tests and is permitted for use on SAT and PSAT/NMSQT. It is solar-powered meaning you won't be stuck with a dead calculator in the middle of a test. The "mode" menu is printed beneath the screen so that you don't need the user's guide again. (Trust me. This is a BIG plus!) It also handles fraction calculation, converts degrees/minutes/seconds both ways, and computes mean and standard deviation.

However, it lacks the HEX-OCT-BIN conversion and complex number calculation features to make it an all-around technical calculator. Users also need to press SHIFT to use the "1/x" and "nCr" functions. In comparison, Casio FX-300MS offers a much more convenient layout and costs only $1 more with the sale going on now (April 2005).

On the numerical side, this model does not store enough digits to be a good financial calculator. For example, this model evaluates 200000 (1 + 0.06/360)^(360*30) to about 1209747.95. A more accurate answer should be about 1209748.04. TI got it; Casio did't. Although the difference is so small that it often doesn't matter in highschool problems, it looks bad on presentation.

Great priced scientific calculator
I recently bought one of these scientific calculators. This calculator is not only compact but it is also inexpensive. And since it is solar powered I never have to worry about the batteries running down if I leave it on. This is a great calculator to buy if you don't want to spend a lot but want to get a lot from it.

This is a handsome looking calculator! Brushed metal body, comfortable, rubber-covered keys. A full twelve digits one can easily hold in one's hand! A bit heavy for pocket or purse...but it can be done! If you absolutely MUST have a TWELVE digit calcultor ti carrt around with you, this one will fit the bill --and purse or pocket, much more easily than many another 12-digit machine. Although not THE smallest 12-digit calculator around, it has to be one of the top 10!

This model, 65-1007, is a re-do of ANOTHER calcultor, also with the model number 65-1007! (I own both machines). They look almost alike, but have some differences. The older calculator, (seemingly not now available), had larger keys...but they seemed hollow, and were more tiring when continually pressed. The older model had plastic, where this one has substituted a more attractive brushed metal. The older machine also was a teensy bit more bulky, though both are of the same approximate size.

HOWEVER, THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGE TO THE NEWER MODEL, HERE BEING REVIEWED, IS THIS: There is a small, separate compartment on the bottom of the calculator, on the right side, which opens with a screwdriver. This enables the USER to replace the battery -- one "AG10W" or "391A" -- with only the said screwdriver, (and the new battery, of course) -- WITHOUT opening the entire back of the machine! Very handy and convenient! (The older model used one "LR1130" battery...and required the entire back to be taken off, en order for the battery to be replaced.)

The "Minus" to this calculator is this: the display is not as easily read as was the older model's. This really isn't apparent, however, unless the two machines are side by side. Although the back area isn't as bright as some machines, this calculator is quite legible in most lighting situations.

The tax calculation section is adequate, and handy. It also has a convenient, (and always working), "CE" key. This calculator, (as did it's earlier, model, with the same model number), also has a sliding "F, 5/4, and CUT 2" section, for decimals, and an "arrow" key, for correcting imput.

The older model, as mentioned above, did NOT have the separate battery compartment, and so necessitated taking the entire back off, to replace the battery. Much more inconvenient! The older model listed at $8.95, (about 20 years ago) -- this one is $39.95. Inflation, it seems, continually marches on! But -- with its new improvements -- its separate battery compartment, its handsome metal facing, its still-smallish size, and its more-easily pressed keys, this newer model may be just what anyone who wants, or needs, a smallish 12- DIGIT, easily-carried-when-necessary, desktop calculator, should have!

If you bought yourself a financial calculator during the 1980s, chances are it was this bad boy. Nothing has changed since its introduction--it still uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), is easy and versatile in programming, and has a thin, sturdy casing. Certainly, there's been newer, fancier calculators introduced since, but there's something to be said for the quality of classics.

The HP 12C's functions include all the basics--such as calculating APR, NPV, and IRR--and statistics are a snap. For students new to financial calculators, this is an excellent place to start. For the most part, the manual reads like a minitextbook, walking you through sample problems and situations followed by graphs and tables demonstrating the technique--and you can even check your results. The section on creating programs does seem to be written for the technically ignorant, addressing in detail how you could possibly benefit from using programs, but it'll still help you get the job done.

In general, it's a bit slower than newer models, just like last year's computer isn't as speedy as today's new release. On the plus side, it's just 3 by 5 inches and slips easily into a pocket. The bottom is printed with a few little cheat notes for common functions, which is nice for quick reference. The HP 12C's one-year warranty and available tech-support line offer reassurance this little workhorse will continue to be an industry standard for years to come. --Jill Lightner

Sturdy Workhorse
I've been using this calculator so long, over fifteen years, that I can't imagine working without it. When I bought this thing it was alone in the field of financial calculators and the 12C is still the standard by which other calculators are judged. It has become the standard "tool of the trade" for financial professional types. I have a senior position with a leading money management firm and I require all of my financial analysts to learn how to master this tool. Learning to master the functions is like taking a review course in finance. The calculator can be used for a variety of financial functions including calendar (day count), interest, cash flow, IRR, compounding, NPV, standard deviation, weighted average, simple programming and more. The calculator is nearly indestructible which can be very handy when a trade goes against you and the calculator is suddenly flying across a trading room. The calculator has a nice form factor, the buttons are easy to use, it fits in a shirt pocket, and it has an auto shut off for battery conservation.

There are other calculators available from HP such as the 10B for about a third the price and the 17B for about the same price. The 10B is inferior to the 12C and I see little reason to buy it. The 17B has greater functionality than the 12C, but I feel it is harder to master, harder to navigate, and it does not fit in a shirt pocket. However, the 17B does allow users to work in standard algebraic or RPN modes. The 12 works only in RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) which can be difficult to get used to. For example using RPN to add 1 and 2 you enter 1 2 . In simple algebraic notation the key sequence is 1 2 <= or enter key>. The difference is that with RPN you enter the operation (plus, minus, etc.) after you enter the values. With simple algebraic you enter the operation between the values.

Overall, this is the "industry standard" calculator for financial professionals and is recommended by AIMR for people taking the CFA exam. I would not recommend this calculator for casual home use as it does take some time to master, but once mastered it is a very powerful tool.

A workhorse calculator at a great price. Anyone can use it.
Calculators may seem a bit "dated" in this age of Palm Pilots and PC's, but when you have to do a lot of calculations and you don't have a spreadsheet on a laptop handy, a good calculator is invaluable.

If you calculate mortgages, compound interest, amortization or any of the common functions in finance on a regular basis, you can't go wrong with this classic calculator, long a standard of the industry. The 120 built-in functions are easy to use and well explained by the manual. Don't see a function you need? You can enter your own mathematical function, too.

If you DON'T do financial calculations regularly, but are in school for anything but science, this is also a great choice. You can even learn a lot about financial calculations just from the manual. If you are a regular person looking for a calculator, I REALLY recommend this one--we all borrow money (car loans, house mortgages) now and then. And RPN, Reverse Polish Notation is SO logical and easy to use once you practice. (Simply put, to add two plus two = four, you enter 2 +, 2+ = and the answer is there. VERY fast for long calculations, like balancing a checkbook.)

I find that the horizontal design (wider than long) is extremely comfortable to hold. And the 12C is very rugged. I used to know a guy from HP who was a rep for the calculator division. He'd demo them by slamming the HP12C against the wall, and then daring the rep from the Big Lone Star State Instruments firm to do the same with theirs. No contest.

Numbers are tabulated in no longer than it takes to hit the * key. The display shows my progress with a pleasant green glow. When I first opened the box, I thought, "Things are going to be different from now on." They certainly were. The Canon P170-DH Printing Calculator holds a place of honor next to my bright red Swingline stapler.

A great buy!
I'm a research scientist. I started using a slide rule in high school about 1947, a computer in 1958, and scientific calculators some time in the early 1970s. Despite the power of computers I still like to have ready access to a good calculator, and my favorite brand (for versatility and ease of use) is Texas Instruments. The TI36X especially impresses me. It is a very powerful, very user-friendly scientific calculator for less than [price]. It performs virtually all scientific functions plus basic statistics and linear regressions and is light-powered in virtually any light. In my view, this is an incredible bargain. In fact, although I already have Texas Instruments calculators in my bedroom, den, living room, and at work, I couldn't resist the TI36X and bought one. It's a terrific calculator! If you don't need graphing capability, I highly recommend this powerful bargain calculator.

Good Enough for the PE Exam
As one of the "official seven" calculators now allowed on the PE exam, this inexpensive calculator was all I needed (civil exam, anyway). As a former die-hard HP fan, it took some retraining to "un-RPN" my fingers, but lots of practice problems using the calculator that I would be using on the test and I was OK. The display is clear and readable, the solar panel powers the calculator with just the light from a computer monitor. Bottom line: a good calculator and a great value.

An amazingly functional calculator.
I have used the TI-36X, which I bought several years ago after I lost the similar TI-35X. This calculator is excellent for everything from Pre-Algebra to Pre-Calculus. I have a feeling that it won't be as adequate for college-level calculus, but the graphing calculator I use (TI-82) is less intuitive and more cumbersome. For $25, the TI-36X should be good for five years of math through trig and statistics. It's the standard too. Most teachers are familiar with its layout, as opposed to the more obscure Casios.

AWESOME TOOL
This was a replacement after 5 years of heavy use. It has a number of pluses: 1) A cover that stays closed until you are ready to open it, 2) a larger screen, 3) bigger keys, 4) Decidely durable whether in pocket or purse. Prior to finding this calculator, I was replacing them about every 6 months. Out of a max of 5 stars, I give it a 6.

Great Little Calculator
I purchased this for the few times when I need a calculator at home. I like the flip lid, and the fact that it is solar and battery powered. The keys are very easy too use, as are the function keys. Just the options most people will need...
Calculated Industries has always been my favorite when it comes to construction based calculators. Lately, however, it seems that they have so many different models to choose from that it makes the buying process a little difficult. This model was the perfect fit. It has all of the basic options that a standard user will need. It doesn't have trig functions or stair caluculations, but most of us won't need those things.

The best thing with this model is that while it is still pocket size, the keys are just a little bit larger than on some other models. This makes it so much easier to hit the right keys the first time.

Overall this is a great construction calculator and the best for the money.

Great calculator!
This is a great calculator for anyone that uses a tape measurer in fraction of inches as I do. I'm a cabinet maker and I replaced my old one after about ten years. This one calculates up to thirty seconds of a inch. At least that is as far as I've gone with it so far. You can do inches, mm, cm, ft, bd ft, yds, convert from all of the above, etc. etc. It has more features then I will ever use and it comes with a nice slip on hard cover and a instruction manual pocket. I highly recommend it.

Not user-friendly
I have this calculator for about 1 year and the paint of the digits have completely faded away.
Often when I push a button, the calculator does not respond.
When you push a calculation button twice, for example +, or first push - and then +, the calculator gives an error, while other calculators would take the last entered calculation button.
When you would like to see a subtotal, for example 3+5+8+ other calculators would calculate at every entry of the +. This calculator doesn't, so you have to enter = first and then do the rest of the calculation.

Perfect basic calculator
Absolutely top-of-the-line calculator for basic science courses. College-level physics, chemistry, biology, statistics--this works just fine. For more advanced math (say, 300-level and above) you may want to consider something higher, and, of course, more expensive. Great value for the money, and rock-solid plastic build!

Better than the TI
I am a math teacher at a new private Bronx high school, and compared the TI-83 with the Casio in numerous regards before deciding which one our school would use. Hands down, the Casio wins, and it is cheaper as well. Note - I do not work for Casio or TI.
A) The calculator is more user friendly. The options are menu driven in a more intuitive way. What took me a minute or two to locate and figure out out the TI, took less than half the time on the Casio. Don't trust me- see for yourself.
B) The Casio is slightly faster than the TI
C)Features: The casio adds a dynamic graphing system (lets you change a coefficient and watch the graph change), which is very useful when teaching. I also like the EQUA feature, which lets my students calculate 2/3 equations, 2/3 unknowns, and solve quadratic or polynomial equations. Maybe the TI does this too, but I couln't figure it out.
D) The color thing I suppose is nice, but I use the CFX-9750, which is black and white and cheaper.

The only downside is that most colleges use the TI's, unfortunately. I liken it to most places using Microsoft when there are better alternatives out there (monopoly power). Anyway, a student who uses the Casio can do anything the TI-83 can do.
I'm a big fan, and my students seem to like it.

Great sometimes, others...
The Casio fx-9750G PLUS is a great calculator for some things, terrible for others. Doing polynomial equations is simple, expecially when compared to a Texas Instruments' version. On the other hand, I have yet to figure out how to do a standard deviation. Keep in mind that if you're in high school, your course is almost definitely using a Texas - I can't tell you how many nights I've spent poring over the manual figuring out how to do the simplest of operations, while those with Texas Instruments know how to do it in a matter of minutes. If you're using it outside a formal math course in a situation that doesn't require too many complicated operations, it's a great calculator - I highly recommend. But if you're Pre-Calc or up, do yourself a favor and go grab a Texas.

Great calculator (I'm a teacher and an engineer)
This calculator is as good or better than my TI 83 plus for much less money. Full price this calculator is only 49.99. I found for even less elsewhere. The graphical icon menu makes it very user friendly without having to study the thick manual.

A half-hearted upgrade is BADDER than no upgrade at all
I have been using both the 12c Platinum (call it 12cP) and 12C for study and at work. I use the 12C gold more often than the 12cP.

My biggest disappointment with the 12cP is its relatively slow processing SPEED vis-a-vis the predecessor 12C and its competition (the HP10B, TIBA2plus).

The 12cP is notably slower than the 12C especially when performing Time Value of Money (TVM) calculations.

Running both HP12s side-by-side with the same data input, my 12cP has been consistently slower by 50% as compared to my 12C.

If possible, I would suggest that potential users and buyers try this data set on both the 12C and 12cP before buying. Clear register. Find [i] after input [PMT]=-1458;[FV]=0,[n]=84,[PV]=103600. The HP12C would take 20 seconds "running" while the HP12cP would take about 30 seconds to give the same answer [i]=0.4059!

This apparent lack of speed is difficult to accept for a supposedly latest financial calculator upgrade from any manufacturer! It is a bad joke, considering that my 12 years old HP10B could perform the same TVM calculation in just 2 to 3 seconds!

However,both HP12Cs are great value for money if the user consider the TOTAL solutions and free website support and training which is available from HP. In addition, there are lots of literature and solutions written by third party users over the still ongoing 20+ years production run of the 12C. IMHO,in addition to excellent user support, the PROGRAMMING capability of the HP12c is the other major face saving advantage which put both the 12Cs over its TI challengers for now.

The good people @ HP may like to know that 96% of my fellow students are now using their competitor's Texas Instrument TI-BAIIplus! The BAII-plus is chosen for its 50% lower price and much faster processing speed. The relative slower speed of the HP12c/12cP does not pull the crowds from TI, especially when speed is much needed during stressful exams condition. A slower processing speed would also cancels off the advantage of learning RPN.

After using the misnomer of a sucessor HP12cP, I personally feel that the 12C is still very much the industry standard. However, it would be better if HP would consider incorporating some useful improvements like a [BACKSPACE] key if it is technically feasible. Also, seasoned 12C users of the RPN would not miss the ALG mode on the 12cP especially when it HP doesn't have ( ) included. The HP12cP is an odd ball ALG calculator from this viewpoint. A suggestion to the dear good people at HP, please let future HP12C GOLD upgrades remain as an exclusively RPN machine.

I would also be very glad if somebody from HP could highlight to me on which are the 10+ more (130+ total)improved functions on the 12cP as compared to the 12C (120+ functions) to help me justify the additional price of 28%+ paid for the 12cP in Singapore.

Both my 12C/cP sets were "Made in China" by probably the same HP OEM to reasonably high HP quality. At a glance, the HP12C gold apparently has better cosmetic finishing than the 12cP. In addition, the keys on the 12C does feel very much better than those on the 12cP.

In a nutshell, the 12cP is more of "an alternative to 12C with ALG mode" than an upgrade or a sucessor of the 12C GOLD. When choosing between the 12C or 12cP, it is wiser to go for the 12C the "good old" 12C or 12C GOLD!

Smart consumers who do not need extra memory for programming and the ALG mode, should go for GOLD, buy the 12C GOLD standard until HP could produce a real and wholehearted improvement of the 12C line.

Stick with the 12c
HP really dropped the ball on this one. The 12cp is poorly made and not worth the money. As was mentioned before, the TVM functions are slower than the 12c. One would think that one of the design benchmarks would be to at least out perform the 12c! There is also a bug in the programming side of the calculator, which if you want more detail, is defined at some calculator websites. I was duped into buying the 12cp and, upon opening the package, immediately noticed the poorer design. The numbers and functions on the keys are painted on instead of being molded into the plastic of the key. I already have a key that is scratched from accidentally dropping the calculator. Also, the "Enter" key has a bounce to it that gives a double click every time I use it. This may be particular to my 12cp, but it is incredibly annoying and the 12c, which I have had for years, works flawlessly. It may be slower, but stick with the "gold" standard and maybe buy an extra one in case HP discontinues it. I gave it one star because they require that something be selected.

Advantages and disadvantages.
Many people wonder: Should I get the HP 12c Platinum or the old standby, the HP 12c gold. Personally, I'd recommend getting both. Like most things, each model has advantages and disadvantages, but both are still among the finest feats in engineering in terms of a calculator. Keep in mind there are two versions of the Platinum -- the original and the 2.0 version. The 2.0 version is much better, and you'll know you have it if it has backspace and undo [g] functions. It's finally a respectible "upgrade" to one of the best calculators ever made.

What about the 12c Platinum?
Advantages:
- Much, much faster than the gold. It crunches IRR calculations in a fraction of the time. You might even find yourself missing the "running" message that's so common with the gold HP 12c. You cannot overestimate the advantage of the increase in speed, especially with test taking.
- Backspace and undo key. Having a backspace key really is nice, especially if you work with many long numbers.
- More program memory. Unlike the gold, the Platinum can hold something like 999 lines of memory. The gold only holds 100 or so, which fills up pretty quickly. Some options pricing models, for instance, will consume all 100 lines.
- Color. Many younger people think the silver color looks "cooler" or more current. Personally, I like the gold -- looks retro or something. It's personal taste, though.

Disadvantages:
- Slightly slower "wake up" period. You have to hold the 'on' button about a half of a second longer for the Platinum calculator to turn on versus the gold. Not a big deal, but a little frustrating for gold users who have years of habit.
- Display font not quite as nice. The gold's display is really nice. The characters are well formed and the screen has a nice contrast to it. The Platinum's screen is a bit different, some might say more updated and similar to other modern HP calculators. It's still very clear, though.
- Harder to see the orange functions. Maybe it's the silver screen plate, but for whatever reason, the orange functions just don't stand out as well as they do on the black faceplate of the gold.
- Buttons feel a little cheaper. I'm not talking about the responsiveness of the keys -- that's actually pretty good on the Platinum (maybe even better than the gold). It's just that the plastic the keys are formed out of plastic that feels a little less dense.
- Button font slightly less bold. Unlike the definitive, almost bold type on the gold's keys, the keys on the Platinum don't stand out as well. The type might be smaller, but I'm not sure. It's not a big deal, but noticeable.
- Lack of key-entry "flash." When you press [PV] or [i] or any of the financial keys on the Platinum, the screen doesn't flash like the gold does. That flash is nice because it really lets you know the data has been punched it. Again, it's not a big deal, since you can [RCL] the data to make sure it's in there. Also, if you have the calculator set on three or more decimal points --and enter a number with less decimal points -- the conversion will make it clear the entry has been made.

Which is best for you? Tough call. If speed is No. 1 to you, Platinum 2.0 for sure. The gold, however, is really close to perfect. What not get one of each?

Fabulous and newly improved Sharp El-W506/W516 scientific calculator
I just purchased the Sharp EL-W506 scientific calculator from the UK at a great low price (from Oxford Educational). However the new Sharp ELW516 now available on Amazon in the USA is apparently ALMOST equivalent to the Sharp EL-W506 (as indicated in the product manual, it is also equivalent to the ELW546). All three nearly identical units have been produced to replace the now discontinued Sharp EL-506WBBK calculator. These are all fabulously improved over the EL-506WBBK and I highly recommend their purchase even in comparison to the Casio FX-115ES (or FX-991ES in Europe) and even over the Casio FX-115ES Plus now available elsewhere.

PROS-
A summary of the most important improvements follows:

a) A catalog is now provided of all functions available within the machine and any of these commands can be stored on the function keys D1-D4 for easy and quick recall.

b) Write-view (Sharp trade mark) 4 line capability for displaying the full set of information on numerical evaluations of integrals and derivatives as well as any other algebraic manipulations. This is totally equivalent to the SVPAM or VPAM available on the Casio FX-115ES or ES Plus, etc.

c) A "Change" key to convert from Decimal to fractional forms and back again which is very similar to what is also found on the respective Casio machines.

d) Full control over the keyboard contrast is also now available.

e) 556 functions are claimed to be available on the new Sharp units as compared to a little over 400 on the FX-115ES (417 functions are claimed on the new FX-115ES Plus). There are also six modes that can be set to work within such as: Normal for integration, ordinary number crunching, etc., Complex numbers, Matrices, Lists, Equation solving, etc.

f) An on-screen form to be filled in is available for full and easy storage of all lists, matrices and vectors. Matrices are also easily manipulated into lists.

g) There is also a much improved set of information provided during the process of obtaining scientific constants and for the conversion of metric values to non-metric unit values as well.

h) Frequently used expressions that you are free to create are quickly and easily stored on the special keys F1-F4 for repeating computations. These same keys (unshifted) can also be used for a very useful multi-line playback of results as well. There are also separate D1-D4 keys (directly above the F1-F4 keys) for memory and expression storage as well giving the Sharp a large number of memory locations.

i) When the calculator turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity, the display resumes to indicate your results exactly where you left off and all work is NOT lost into cyberspace! This feature the Casio will not perform as all work is lost when the Casio is turned off!

j) Statistical functions are also input more intuitively and conveniently (arrangements have been changed on the keyboard) than on the EL-506WBBK as well (A set of up to 100 values can be input for 2 parameter statistics). All of the one parameter {x} and two parameter {x,y} statistical data (each separately specified with frequency of occurrence information) are also readily available on-screen with the touch of the central up-down, left-right control key, both before and after their entry for editing, etc. Unlike the Casio FX-115ES calculator which then consolidates the statistics calculations into a single isolated menu accessed from the keyboard, the Sharp has numerous specified keys shifted through the alpha key prompt to access all statistical results which makes its keyboard somewhat busy compared to the Casio, but still very useful and well organized.

k) The solutions displayed for both cubic and quadratic equations are now in a much more readable form as well as for the two and three values linear equation solutions.

l) A name or lengthy phrase with embedded spaces can also be readily stored deep within the machine that is automatically displayed with the Sharp Logo during the shutdown process. I believe that this new feature will tend to cut down on theft problems too.

m) The new EL-W506/516/546 now requires only a single LR44 backup battery unlike the EL-506WBBK which required 2 of these batteries.

n) Even after all this, its size hasn't changed at all and the new Sharps can still evaluate up to 4th order matrices whereas the Casio will only evaluate matrices as high as 3rd order!

o) The newly revised MATH menu is an excellent control feature for doing various operations within various modes as is the SET-UP control menu shifted on the same key.

CONS:

a) Numerical integrals on the new Sharp units are now a little slower to perform than on the Casio FX-115ES for example, but once complicated integrals are performed the time differences are much smaller.

Finally, in this global world of ours, I wish that both Sharp as well as Casio would do a better job of providing more reliable and truthful information not only to us the end users, but also to its N. American employees on the distribution to N. America of all of its various new products.

Sharp EL-W506 versus Casio FX-115ES
I bought a Sharp EL-506R eight years ago because I thought it was the best deal under $20 for a scientific calculator. (I thought the Sharp had been the best deal ever since the EL-506A was introduced.) Then the Casio FX-115MS and FX-115ES (ES) were introduced. Sharp has responded with the EL-W516 (W), so I was anxious to compare it to the similar ES. Both have the entry mode that looks like problems written on paper. Very nice! The following observations are in no particular order.

First the Sharp. I prefer the CHANGE button to the S-D on the ES. It rotates three forms of an answer; mixed number, improper fraction, and decimal.

Arguments for trig and log functions on the W do not require parentheses.
The percent key on the ES no longer does the unique and clever increase, decrease, and change functions as on older Casio models. The W percent is now better.

The W has two more memories (E and F), 4X4 matrices instead of 3X3, 4 matrices rather than 3, and 4 lists rather than 3 vectors.

The W includes pental (base 5) numbers.

The DRILL feature generates quizzes on basic math facts. (Our calculator dependent generation is getting very weak on these!)

Adding vectors in polar form is easier and the display can show the entire answer without scrolling. And changing from rectangular to polar is easier.

The W can do constant calculations with the four basic functions.
It has 4 definable functions and 4 formula memories. These can be used in matrix and list modes.

It has a catalog menu of all functions.

The constants and conversions are stored in the calculator and not on an external list and therefore always available.

The DRG button allows you to convert from degrees to radians, etc. (The DRG button on the ES is completely different; it allows you to enter an angle in degrees while the calculator is in the radian mode, for example.)

The W can store your name so that it is displayed along with the Sharp logo when it is turned off. You can include your telephone number or the name of your favorite nerd on the second line. :-)

The sigma function allows increments other than one. You can add all the odd numbers from 1 to 99, for example, by changing the increment to 2.

The random function includes die, coin, and integer. The die generator, for example, shows numbers one to six.

It is not necessary to specify a separate list for the frequency of data in the STAT mode. It simply requires a comma and the frequency number when it is not one. (This applies to both one and two dimension data.) Also, the associated statistics variables (a, b, r, x', y', etc.) are on the keyboard and easily accessible.

The STO and RCL keys do not require a 2nd function prefix.

Generally speaking, the W requires fewer keystrokes for the frequently used functions. For example, restoring the defaults requires 5 keystrokes on the ES and only 3 on the W.

Now to the Casio. The integral function uses the Gauss-Kronrod method (whatever that is) rather than Simpson's method on the W. It seems faster and more accurate.

The often used ANS and Square Root keys do not require the 2nd prefix.

Results of calculations in different modes can be expressed as exact fractions. Complex numbers can even mix radicals and fractions. Also, complex numbers can be stored in the A-D memories. (The W displays decimals only when not in the normal mode.)

The TABLE function is very handy when you want to view a function over a given domain.

The VECTOR function can actually be duplicated using the LIST function on the W. The W can calculate dot product, cross product, and absolute value using lists as vectors. The VECTOR function is easier to use. However, the W can store complicated formulas, for example, like the angle between vectors and perpendicular vectors, for easily repeated calculations.

The MATRIX and EQUATION functions are nearly identical on the two calculators. I find the ES a little more user friendly on the equation applications. When you modify a matrix or a vector (list), the ES simply uses the data function. The W is rather awkward; it requires a four step process of load, modify, exit, and store. However, it is easier to copy a matrix or list on the W. I wish both the ES and the W would handle matrices and vectors and lists like graphics calculators. They are much more intuitive and easier to remember.

The data used for regression can be saved if you want to try another curve fit. The W erases your data if you decide to try another fit for a better correlation coefficient.

It is possible to generate and find the sum of the terms in an arithmetic or geometric sequence simultaneously using the independent memory. Once initiated, each term only requires one keystroke on the ES. A similar process is possible on the W, but each term requires two keystrokes.

One feature that the ES dropped from the MS model is the copy function. On the older MS model, it was possible to program all the keystrokes necessary to solve the ambiguous case (SSA) by only pressing the equal button. You could view all six results!

I may come back and add to this review as I have longer to live with both calculators. So which one is better? That's a tough question. Both are superior to the HP and TI models in the same price range as far as I am aware. I think nobody would buy these if they knew what the ES and W are capable of. The perfect calculator in this price range would have all the ES and W features with RPN!

The ES is available in many outlets, the W is only available by mail order. I think I prefer the W, but it is close. I would not complain if I had to settle for the ES. If both calculators were available to use, in my subjective humble opinion, I would choose to use the W most of the time. But that may change over time.

Update on a Classic
Being a young math nerd and later moving on to engineering I have always needed a good calculator next to me.

In my youth I had a previous version of this calculator, the Sharp EL-506D, which had scads of functions I did not understand the purpose of, but was fascinated with nonetheless. I used that same calculator all through college, slowly learning the significance of new functions such as complex numbers (useful in electromagnetics) hex and octal conversions (digital logic) three variable equation solving (algebra and later on differential equations).

I still have that calculator and it still works great. The only problem is I have worn the paint off of some of the buttons. I decided to start looking around for a new version of this calculator and after going through several I found the Sharp W535B - which is a great calculator as well, but doesn't have as many functions as the old EL-506D that I've got.

I found the Writeview feature on the W535B (also found on casio and TI models) so great though that I searched all over for a newer version of my old beater and found the Sharp W506B.

To my dismay, that calculator is not sold inside the US at this time and to get one you need to import from England, essentially tripling the price.

Then I finally found this W516B at Amazon - and it has all of the essential functions that are on the W506B. This is a great calculator. There are so many improvements over my old 506D that I don't even miss it.

The list goes on. You will never need another calculator. I've had several calculators, plus programmable graphing, but I don't think programmable calculators will help very much to drill basic math skills into your head, which is necessary for tests. This calculator is a great balance in that it helps speed up some of the basics but doesn't do everything for you.

Highly recommended.

I recently got this exact calculator as I started up my Electronics college course. It's been nothing but amazing for me. Viewing multiple problems and answers at a time is good, but browsing your entire history with the arrow pad is great.

It intuitive too. While brosing through my previous entries, I found a few different answers that I wanted to plug in together and get the sum. I browsed my way up to one, and on a guess, hit ENTER. It placed that number in my new problem at the bottom. Okay, lets see if it will do it again... I hit PLUS, then browsed up and got another old answer. It not only remembered what I'd input so far on the new problem, but put my next selection exactly where I hoped! All this is probably in the manual, but this is so well designed, there are many cases like this example where things just work out the way I think they should.

One negative on this calculator is the CLEAR button and the DELETE button. I'm glad they spaced them apart, but they put the CLEAR button where I would think they'd put DELETE. And vice versa. I've looked at other Texas Instrument calculators, and this seems to be the convention... maybe it's just me.

I appreciate their use of the button "x10^n" instead of the "EE" button. I had no idea what EE would be without finding it in the manual, but I knew right away what to expect when I hit x10^n.

Lastly, this calculator's design and wording have been a great stepping stone for me, to get past the gap between dinky little arithmatic calculators and heavy-duty graphing calculators.

Highly recommended. Incredible buy.

complex fractions made simple
I picked this up halfway through the semester of a University level Descriptive Chemistry course. More intuitive than other TI calcs. I wish I had this 2 months ago, I can arrange problems as they appear on my paper. Wrong answers due to forgotten parenthesis, are one less thing to worry about.

Fails in comparison to other scientific non-graphing calculators
Update: I wanted to add that the Casio FX-115ES is a SCIENTIFIC AND NON-GRAPHING CALCULATOR (same class as the TI-30XS MultiView) that handles everything the TI-30XS Multiview fails to cover such as integrals, derivatives, complex numbers, phasors, different log bases AND matrices.

I had been researching calculators for use on standardized exams now that many of the graphing calculators are banned.

The HP 33/35 calculators are too expensive and too "antiquated" to be of any use to me. I liked the TI-30XS MultiView because of the large display, but I later found out the 30XS MV lacked many features found on the Casio FX-115ES scientific non-graphing calculator and even other TI graphing calculators. After evaluating the FX-115ES scientific non-graphing calculator and TI-30XS MV, I came to the conclusion that the FX-115ES scientific non-graphing calculator is by FAR the superior calculator.

The TI-30XS MV is too basic of a calculator. I'd recommend it for elementary school use, perhaps even for algebra. For example it is unable to evaluate integrals or differentials and there is no direct option to select different logarithm bases using the 30XS (every second counts on a timed exam and I'd rather buy a scientific non-graphing calculator that handles different logarithmic bases directly). The 30XS also lacks the ability to process matrices which the Casio FX-115ES scientific non-graphing calculator does process. The 30XS does not recognize the imaginary domain, hence the lack of "i" or "j" (try to do square root of -1). This makes the 30XS useless for engineers that have to deal with the imaginary domain for vectors, polar math, etc... especially on timed exams. That reminds me, the 30XS cannot handle phasor angles intuitively. There's a whole menu system for angles that I have yet to figure out. One would imagine the creator of the TI-8x graphing calculators would make a half-way decent scientific calculator, but instead we end up with a children's calculator. In case you haven't noticed, the Casio FX-115ES scientific non-graphing calculator is clearly superior and performs many functions that are omitted on the TI-30XS.

Pros: Affordable scientific calculator, dual-power supply (Solar and battery), TI interface (intuitive for existing TI users), nice display

Cons: Funky hard-cover (doesn't slide in place like all other TI calculators), lack of a large number of important features. There's also a limit to how many characters or instructions you can put into a single line. I was adding up my grocery list and it ran out of memory.

Bottom line: I recommend looking at the Casio FX-115ES scientific non-graphing calculator instead of the TI-30XS MultiView, although the TI-30XS MV isn't physically a bad calculator. I just felt it was a child's toy compared to the Casio FX-115ES scientific non-graphing calculator.

Good but there's a bug...
I chose this calculator after looking at 6-7 other candidates. I teach a Mathcounts class at a local middle school and this calculator has several key features. First and foremost is the 2 line, editable, display that shows me what a student keyed. That's crucial in helping me see where they made an error when they get a wrong answer. The 'editable' feature usually means that a few keystrokes are all that are needed to correct an error rather than re-keying the entire expression.

The second feature is the list of readily available functions. Mathcounts topics (mathcounts.org) cover a wide spectrum of mathematics far beyond what a typical middle school curriculum requires so the calculator had to have permutation, combination, and factorial functions. This calculator has them.

It handles fraction and radical notation nicely - it displays the square root of 12 as 2sqr(3) which helps the students check their conceptual understanding when we're rationalizing or simplifying radical expressions. Flipping between displaying 1/2 and .5 requires but a single keystroke. Flipping between mixed number and improper fractions requires only two keystrokes.

The solar panel has saved at least one student from having a completely dead calculator when he drained his battery. The panel ekes out just enough juice to give you a glimmering display which is better than nothing. A slightly larger solar panel would be nice.

Finally, the manual is available online so you don't have to try to read a multi-lingual manual printed in 6 point type on rice paper. Kudos to the project manager for posting the pdf. Much appreciated!

Unfortunately, there's a bug in the firmware which turned up in a calculator exercise. If you key in 75025 and ask for it to be represented to 4 significant digits in scientific notation, the calculator gives the correct result, 7.503e4. However if you arrive at 75025 by computing the 25th fibonacci number using f(25) = ((1+sqr(5))^25-(1-sqr(5))^25)/(2^25*sqr(5)), the calculator displays 7.502e4. Reset the display to show an integer result and it correctly shows 75025. Somehow, doing the calculation, as opposed to entering the number, confuses the display routine.

We work around the bug by rounding the result ourselves instead of relying on the calculator to do it but the bug somewhat reduces my confidence in the calculator's ability to correctly compute. Hopefully, the bug will be fixed by next school year when we buy another class their calculators. Were it not for the bug, I'd rate the calculator at 5 stars.

Great algebra calculator
This item has "Natural Display" which displays fractions as they would be in a hand written environment. Easy to use and dual powered, it assisted me thru 2 algebra classes and soon college algebra.

Cheaply made
The backlight went out after just 2 days....it no longer lights up on either the face or shell.
Before that I was still not happy with it, anyway. Even when it did work the outside shell light was too bright to sleep next to when set to any color other than red, even with the dimmer set to low.
Also, barely bumping the LCD screen would leave black marks in the display you'd have to try to shake or massage out.
The only good thing about this clock was the idea. But it was very poorly done.

I bought this for my kids and they loved it. We have only owned it a few weeks and it is down to 2 colors and a weird 3rd hybrid color. It is such a wonderful idea but nothing is quality anymore. Don't even bother!

NO color changing alarm clock
I bought this clock for my daughter. She loved the different colors. Within the first day that we bought it, it would only change to 2 of the 7 colors. We took it back to the store, exchanging it for the same clock. The 2nd one took a couple of weeks, but it too is down to about 3 colors.

Awesome, powerful, cheap.
Calculus is easy for this graphing calculator. It finds derivative, limits and tons of other calculus. It can graph piecewise functions which is helpful. It can factor and solve quadratics, quartics and higher. Get it; you'll fall in love.

TI 89 Calculator
I bought this for my daughter who needed it for a college math class. The calculator arrived very quickly. My daughter is very pleased with the calculator. We were both very pleased with the service this company provided. I highly recommend them.

Simple, powerfull
The only thing that I've never liked is that the letters in the screen are way too little, it takes time to get used to it(specially if you are a ti86 or hp's calcs former user), when compared to the newer hp models (50g and so on..) its a toy because of the lack of speed and memory(even the titanium model, try to solve a 21 degree polinomial ecuation in it... and yes some people has to deal with those monsters in real life situations) but its easier to get aroud with it.

The Cover is Key
The best thing about this calculator is that it's got a cover that latches. No, it doesn't lock, but that little hard-plastic door closes over the keypad, so when I toss it into my briefcase and head out, I don't have to worry about damage to the keypad, or the thing being turned on and staying on as a stray pen or something just keeps pushing its buttons. The main power source is light, but it's got a simple battery backup, the batteries being accessible when you pull two small philips-head screws from the back of the case.

This thing is small and mobile, and is perfect for my mobile business needs. I'm not going to be plotting spacecraft trajectories or formulating amino acid degradations today, so I don't need anything more than the basic arithmetic functions it offers (as well as %, square root and basic memory functions).

The buttons are just the right size, not so big that I feel like this thing is a learning toy for a 2 year old, or has been made for the myopic over-70 set. The buttons are big enough that I can quickly tap out my work without mashing down multiple buttons.

To conclude, if you want a small calc you can tote with you and that will not let you down by running out of power, this is the one. If you're after a reliable little machine to crank out your daily checkbook totals or to tally up the pro-rating on your timesheet entries, then this is the one you want. Recommend.

Ideal Calculator For Simple Operations
If you want a VERY BASIC, SMALL calculator that only adds, subtracts, divides, and multiplies, and has a memory, square root key, plus/minus key, and percent key, this is the one to get. Most important is that it has a CE ("Clear Entry") key: If you're adding or subtracting a lot of numbers and enter an incorrect value halfway through, you can delete it from the display by pressing CE without disturbing the calculations that you've already done. NEVER BUY A CALCULATOR THAT DOES NOT HAVE A CE KEY, because if you enter a wrong number somewhere along the line, you'll lose all your work when you press the only Clear key, which clears everything! (As you can tell, I made this mistake.) The buttons are a good size (not too small or too large), the calculator takes up very little room on a desk or in a purse or briefcase, and it calculates quickly. The cover is attached and unobtrusive if you just want to leave it on a desk. After 18 months, the calculator is still working fine. At this low price, I'd have no problem replacing it once a year if necessary.

Basic Calculator
I purchased this calculator for use on my financial accounting exams in college. They require this specific calculator for use on the exams so everyone is on a "level playing field" so to speak. That being said, it must be good, right? From what I can tell, it is a good calculator. Nothing fancy though. If you want a small, easy to read/use, basic calculator this one is a good choice.

This is a great little calculator. I love the cover, which protects it from accidentally being turned on or smooshing buttons in my pocket or bag. It is very small, which is perfect for over-filled scrub pockets. It has all the features you need for basic medicine and medical calculations- perfect for the NICU!
My only qualm is that the shipping price was more than the cost of the actual product!

Best Calculator for High School Students
If you are a high school student, then this calculator is for you. It has everything you need, for algebra, precalculus, and calculus. The graphing capabilities of the TI-83+ are a superb choice for Algebra I classes. The ability to automatically find intersections and a variety of other important components of a graph are only key presses away.

Depends what you are using it for
If you are thinking of using this calculator for Algebra, Geometry, basically any straight math, especially Calculus, DON'T. That is not to say it won't work, just that there are better things out there, namely the TI-89. The 89 is somewhat more expensive, but, in my opinion and experience, it is far superior for these applications. A few reasons: easier to get the results from previous entries, support for derivitives and integrals, and the higher resolution looks better and lets you put more on the screen at one time, as well as allowing more symbols. However, if you are planning on using the calculator for Statistics, get the 83, because, for some unknown reason, the TI engineers declined to put ANY suppport for stats on the 89, but the 83 is great at it. I have owned TI calculators for many years, and I have never experienced any quality or production problems with them and have never had any of them break except when treated REALLY badly, such as having very heavy, blunt objects dropped on the screen, and I do tend to use mine pretty hard.

Best way to add feet and inches
This is the third Calculated Industries construction calculator I've owned. I've purchased them because, to my knowlege, they are the only calculator available with these functions. As a residential designer I find it incredibly usefull for day to day calculations without the tedious conversions required to use numeric calculators. The ability to convert metric equivalents is also quite handy. Finally the Trig functions make this a fully capable tool.

As for disadvantages, the number entry is a little tiresome, to enter 1'6 1/2" you must press: 1, feet, 6, inch, 1, /, 2. But the pay off is worth while to get results in appropraite units. The other limitations of the calculator are the number of digits displayed, 7 is the most you're allowed to enter and it will give you errors if your result is greater than 8 digits. Also the Calculator does round, 13/16 divided by 2 equals 7/16, but we're only talking 1/32, but I'd rather see a decimal result in that case.

All in all the calc is super handy and has nearly allowed me to forget how to count by twelves and sixteens. It's the best solution until we all go metric.

Best calculater for draftsman
This is the forth calculator like this I have bought. One a different brand and the other 2 have been from Calculated Industries (Maker of the construction master pro) and this has been the best one so far.

I love it's ability to handle feet and inches, built in trig (pich/rise/run calculation) that way I don't have to remember the sign cosign and tangent and how to use them. Built in circular calculations, ability to convert between metric and imperial (feet and in).

There are several other functions that are cool, but I do not use, like the ability to figure stairs, figure a compound miter, ex.

If you are looking for a calculator for a job site, or as a draftsman in my opinion you can not go wrong with this one.

Ok, should have cost lost considering scratch on item recd
Paid alot for the item for it to be shipped in a plastic wrap with bubble wrap around it in the inside. The calculator looks like it's been sitting on store shelves for awhile because the the packaging was a bent up. But the calculator itself has a couple of marks. Will not ship back because that's more frustrating and I am bedridden. But will not buy from amazon again. I think I've learned a learn with this site one too many times. Thanks, but no thanks.

A Machine You Can Count On
For the money, and for general office use, this is a great printing calculator. I have owned a number of Canon and Casio printing calculators but I think I've found the best one to date with this Casio model. I am especially appreciative of the extra-large digital display.

excellent product
this calculator replaces a very old calculator that had died. This one is easy to use and has many options whether to print or not to print and is relatively quiet during operation.

Agreed all around
Many other reviewers have already made the point, I can only affirm it. For the price, it's a great calculator but the instructions are awful and very difficult to follow. I ended up spending $12 after the fact for replacement ink cartridges because not only are the directions/illustrations unclear about how to install the ink cartridge, but if one is not careful, the cartridge slips out of your fingers and easily becomes irretrievably lost inside the guts of the calculator. (I can hear it rattling around in there, but cannot get it out.) Be warned, local supply stores' listing of replacement cartridges will not have this model listed in their stores, so be sure to ask and make sure that you get the proper replacement cartridge (the HR 100 is NOT the same as the HR 100TM; I learned the hard way.)

This is a superb calculator !
I purchased this Casio ClassPad 330 through Amazon and Computer Brain Inc. I ordered the calculator on November 15 and I received it on November 18 via an express carrier. I am delighted by the responsiveness of Computer Brain and their working relationship with Amazon. It's an ideal partnership that gives buyers like me a great feeling of security, and attention at a great price.
I bought the Casio 330 AFTER I already purchased the Hewlett-Packard 50G AND the Texas Instruments nSpire with TI-84 keyboard. The HP is a quality product built to the standards of their long line of calculators. The TI nSpire represents great value for the price along with a widespread user community. I kept the HP because of its external SD storage capability although it will take me a long time to master the keyboard and internal functions. I'd rather not spend the time required with the HP to master its capability. I was a former jet aircraft pilot and I like to joke that the HP is more complex than my old aircraft cockpits. Regrettably, I returned the TI nSpire/84 because the display was so dim that my eyes hurt after ten minutes of straining. When calculators like the TI have adjustments for contrast, it's really an erroneous understanding because when you increase font contrast, you also increase the contrast of the background screen which means the font does NOT improve relative to its screen background.
The Casio 330 has tremendous contrast range which actually works. I even left the contrast setting at the default level because it is super, even for my old, tired eyes. The screen has stylus touch ability that HP and TI both lack. This makes the Casio operate a lot like a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). It's intuitive, responsive, and fun to work with. There are applications, functions, and modes of operation common to other high-end devices along with the ability to connect to a desktop. If you feel that Casio is limited to low-end, low-cost devices, think twice and give this calculator a chance. If you purchase it from Computer Brain through Amazon, you'll discover like I did that it's the perfect solution to other troublesome calculators. One last thing-the Casio comes with a hard-shell protective case, startup manuals, cable connectors, batteries, and the best news of all - IT'S NOT PACKED IN A BUBBLE-PACK which is often impossible to open. Casio comes in a nice, "retro" box.

ClassPad 330: accessible, advanced math problem-solving tool
I've used the ClassPad 330 while taking college math classes and now as a math teacher, and I'd recommend it almost without reservation to both students and teachers who are learning and teaching math. Whether it's an algebraic equation or a limit, derivative, or integral, it can solve almost any standard problem you'd see in high school math or the first year or two of a college math major sequence. (Not talking about word problems or proofs of course.) It can solve these problems symbolically or numerically and in 'math textbook form' for both input and output. The lack of standard input keys is no issue because the stylus-based touch-screen contains hundreds of math operations in logically-organized menu sections. This calculator also has powerful statistics, series/sequences, programming, standard-graphing, and 3d-graphing tools. It has a useful 'split-screen' feature where you can, for example, view your definite integral solution on the top half and the graph of that integrals area on the bottom half. Speaking of the screen, the display is clear and easy for my eyes to focus on even after spending hours solving problems in low-light conditions. While the ClassPad 330 may not be 'legal' on every math test you take, it's proven indispensable to me in studying and preparing for tests (and now creating and double-checking tests of my own). As a separate product, you can buy an emulator version (ClassPad Manager) that is very useful for teachers, as well as create activities and demonstrations for students with just the ClassPad 330 itself. One caveat though--this is for students of math and science (as well as teachers, engineers, and scientists in the working world) who want to delve deeper and perform, mathematically speaking, at their peak. If you're taking a college algebra class for a liberal arts major, have no interest in math (which is completely fine of course, English was my first major and I love the liberal arts), and will never take another math class again, this calculator may not be for you.

Great tool for engineering students
I'm Venezuelan and i'm studying oil engineering... This graphing calculator is a great and very interactive tool... Easy to use... I first had the HP50g but i changed it for the classpad because it saves me much more time in the exams than the other, the only thing i don't like about the Classpad is the lack of an unit converter as the one of the HP, its kind of important in what i'm studying and now i don't have it.

I bought the Casio fx-9860G Slim Graphing Calculator because of the combination of enhanced and easy to use functionality, with a superb display. After previously using other powerful calculators with tiny font sizes and confusing/massive instructions at times, this is a major step up. It has everything needed for most mathematics - calculus, equation solvers, stats, spreadsheets, graphing, programming, recursion etc. and once connected to the Casio Web page using the included Casio software link, other apps can be added - the geometry app is fun and useful. For the cost, this clobbers the higher priced competition - I donated a calculator that cost twice as much to my employer's charity Christmas raffles. I had given up on calculators in favor of laptop/PC based math codes, but now it is fun again to use a calculator for courses and to just sit back at work sometimes & crank the numbers while going through tech. publications.

Speedy MOFO...
This calculator graphs things about 5 times faster than any other calculator (comparing to hp 48gx, ti 92+). It's a pretty straight forward calculator. Another cool feature is mini-excel application, so you can massage big sets of numbers to your liking. I was at a bar having a graph argument, and thank god I had this folding calculator with backlight in my pocket ready to settle this argument, but even though I was right I was kicked out of the bar. Your results may vary :) It's not as smart as hp48/49/50 or a ti89/92/voyage, but it gets its points in portability and the oh-so-important night usability, as well as raw computational quickness (this thing never shows an hour glass), it literally graphs a sinewave in 1/4 of a second across the screen.

Very high quality graphing, clamshell design Casio calculator without a CAS
I have owned top of the line graphing and scientific calculators from TI, HP, Casio, Sharp, etc. This machine, the Casio FX-9860g Slim version, continues the Casio quality tradition and is definitely put together very well. It is also a very good improvement over its predecessor, the Casio FX-9860g, with a very fine pocketable clamshell portable design with a much improved keyboard layout except for the location of the Navigation keypad itself, etc. At $69.99 right now from one of the quality suppliers in NJ on the Amazon website, it is indeed a very great deal!

The pros and cons as I see it are:

PROS:

1) It has all the standard features that we have come to expect on such a machine, plus the inclusion of an electronic OS upgrade capability from the Casio educational website. This is done using a USB interface with a PC computer and is also quite fast and easy to set up. The current OS production version is 1.10, but it can be upgraded to the OS version 2.0 (which is almost entirely compatible with the current system hardware) at Casio's educational website.

2) The machine itself is quite fast with a nice graphical interface and resultant plotting system. The resultant plots are high quality and with the many added features available for enhancement are very intuitive for the learning process.

3) It has a nice and quite modern, folding clamshell body design that sits very nicely both on a desk or a table as well as in your hand. It even has two feet for great stability that are constructed on the bottom at the back of the very well made unit.

4) It has a very large amount of onboard main memory, plus additional Flash memory for tackling quite memory intensive problems.

5) Although it is called a calculator, it is really a small and very fast handheld computer system which can tackle problems from the most simple to almost the most complex.

6) It has a very useful user interface system with multiple icons. The calculator functions are all controlled using an Algebraic Operating System (AOS).

7) It has a very high quality backlight system that makes the display screen much easier to read at very low, prevailing light levels.

8) It also has a very fine stored Help system with both syntax and an onboard Manual of Explanations for every command in the FX-9860 System Catalog. Both the Help function and the System Catalog function are available at the touch of a key (or a shifted key for the System Catalog).

CONS:

1) Some functions that you would readily expect to be available with a single key press on the main keyboard (such as the common hyperbolic functions for example) require instead multiple key presses (hyperbolics are embedded in the OPTN menu softkeys which is much more inconvenient), but usually with only a single shift key press first.

2) This machine is limited to graphing functions in two-dimensions (2-D) and NOT in 3-D as can be performed on the Casio Classpad330 (or the HP50g or the TI-89 Titanium or on the TI-89 or on the TI Voyage 200).

3) There is no CAS (Computer Algebra System) at all which these days is a very BIG limitation. Casio CAS systems are now only available on the Classpad 330 pen-based system or on the older FX-2.0Plus which is much harder to find at all or even at a good price these days, since it was first introduced about 2000.

4) The FX-9860g Slim does not require a backup coin cell battery, but is powered only by two AAA batteries for over 150 hrs with no backlight and for 50 hrs with the backlight on continuously. This is a significant battery life improvement over the comparable HP and TI models.

5) The navigation keypad is located on the bottom left of the front face of the keyboard. This is just fine for left-handers, but for primarily right handed individuals, it should be located on the right hand bottom side in my opinion for much easier and far more natural key stroke motions.
